The Lifecycle of Kelp

Kelp is one of the most productive organisms on the planet, with a lifecycle that directly supports marine ecosystems, climate mitigation, and coastal resilience. As a fast-growing seaweed, it captures carbon, produces oxygen, and grows without the need for freshwater, or fertilizers, making it an increasingly important nature-based climate solution.

But what exactly is kelp’s lifecycle, and how does it contribute to ecological restoration?

The Lifecycle of Bull Kelp

Bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana) is a canopy-forming brown seaweed native to the Pacific West Coast of North America. It is typically classified as an annual species, meaning it completes its lifecycle within a single year.

Beginning

In the wild, the kelp lifecycle begins when mature kelp plants release millions of microscopic spores into the surrounding waters. These spores settle on hard substrates, like rocks, where they develop into gametophytes, the reproductive phase of the plant. Male and female gametophytes produce eggs and sperm, and upon fertilization, a new sporophyte begins to grow.

Spring & Summer

By late summer, bull kelp reaches maturity. In the process, it forms canopy-like “underwater islands” that create critical habitat for species like rockfish, scallops, shrimp, and even sea otters. Kelp farms and restoration sites enhance this effect by introducing new infrastructure or turning simple structures into rich marine ecosystems.

End of Lifecycle

As the growing season comes to an end in the Fall, bull kelp begins to naturally deteriorate. Mature plants release spores to seed the next generation, and the unharvested kelp either breaks down in place, washes ashore, or drifts through the ocean, providing continued ecological value.

Even in decay, kelp supports biodiversity, offering food and shelter to marine animals like urchins, seabirds, and even coastal wolves on kelp-washed shores.

Assisted Kelp Restoration

Thoughtful human intervention can accelerate the kelp cycle for the better and introduce kelp into environments where kelp used to thrive but can no longer regenerate naturally.

At veritree’s partner site led by Coastal Kelp in collaboration with First Nations communities, reproductive material is collected from local wild kelp populations, ensuring that new growth is genetically adapted to the surrounding environment. This approach safeguards biodiversity while maintaining balance within native marine ecosystems.

In areas where natural kelp forests have been lost, or where kelp wouldn’t normally grow due to mud-bottom ocean floors, restoration teams build specialized structures that mimic the hard substrate kelp needs to anchor and grow. These mooring-based installations as well as seeded lines become the foundation for entirely new kelp and marine habitats.

This balance between natural reproduction and human-guided cultivation allows kelp forests to expand and regenerate. In doing so, targeted harvesting doesn't deplete ecosystems, it strengthens them, making it a key tool in scaling ocean restoration efforts.

Harvested kelp supports ecosystem restoration, sustainable food systems, and community livelihoods.

Our partner, Coastal Kelp works in partnership with Sea Forest who use the kelp for a variety of different products including food (noodles, seasonings, smoothies, purees and hot sauce) as well as for natural fertilizer.  

Kelp farming also contributes to food security and sovereignty, especially when led in partnership with Indigenous communities. For example, kelp is being incorporated into traditional and contemporary foods, reviving culinary practices and strengthening coastal economies.

The Future of Kelp and Climate

As global attention turns toward scalable climate solutions, kelp offers a compelling model. Its lifecycle supports biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and ocean health at every stage, from spore to canopy to decomposition. Combined with thoughtful human intervention and Indigenous knowledge, kelp restoration represents a powerful strategy for regenerative aquaculture and marine conservation.
